The decision of the Law Lords to deny the Chagos Islanders the right to return to their island homes is indefensible and outrageous. The New Labour government's successful appeal against the islanders' rights underlines the role of a country in the pocket of the US super state.
A country is judged by the way it treats its most vulnerable citizens. The willingness of New Labour to sacrifice people for the needs of their partnership with the United States in the Iraq and Afghanistan adventures is the very antithesis of Socialism and an insult to the thousands who have given so much to improve the lives of the people.
The 2000 Chagos Islanders are not giving up their fight and we should support them in any way we can through our communities and the TU and Labour movement organisations.
