AGS Press Release
42 Days - Davis Is Not SeriousTories outflank New Labour on the left for their own reasons
Issued Friday 27 June 2008 For immediate release
The announcement that David Davis is resigning his seat to stand as a candidate in the same constituency to oppose the 42 day detention decision taken by parliament has hidden agendas. Civil Liberties is a remarkably ill fitting suit on David Davis - shadow Home Secretary of a party traditionally associated with the hang-em-flog-em brigade.
This move illustrates how New Labour has moved to an ultra right position on many issues. The sham to which Brown and his associates have reduced Labour would make the founders of the Labour Party turn in their graves.
The Alliance for Green Socialism has long campaigned against loss of freedom. New Labour and the Tory Party before it, have consistently eroded our liberties. Davis himself voted for 28 day detention without charge – longer than anywhere else in Europe.
Davis’ stand is probably more about positioning himself to have another attempt at the Tory Party leadership than about civil liberties. He wants to eclipse Cameron and he thinks this manoeuvre will give him the limelight and secure him an advantage.
Civil Rights activists will not take this circus seriously, aware that the fight for civil liberties is a long and complex one and not resolved by re-electing a Tory in a safe Tory seat.
