Mike Davies responds to the Stop the War Coalition questionnaire

Mike Davies, PPC Leeds East

The Stop the War Coalition has asked every candidate in the 2010 General Election a series of questions on war, peace and foreign policy. Here is the response of Mike Davies, AGS candidate for Leeds East.
  1. Do you support the immediate withdrawal of British and NATO troops from Afghanistan?

Yes. We have no business trying to impose a government on another country. And, as before, we will lose.

  2. Did you support the war in Iraq?

No, I actively opposed it, as did the Alliance for Green Socialism.

  3. Will you oppose any military attack on Iran by the United States or Israel?

I will oppose any such attack. I wait in vain for the news that the USA is threatening to attack Israel for its clandestine development of nuclear weapons.

  4. Do you support the immediate closure of the Guantanamo Bay prison?

Guantanamo should be closed immediately, as should the other illegal US detention centres such as Bagram.

  5. Are you opposed to the renewal of Trident nuclear weapons?

I am opposed to the renewal or replacement of Trident in any form. Britian should get rid of all its nuclear weapons immediately. Nuclear weapons are immoral and are illegal under international law. They are also horribly expensive. Britain should neither possess them nor allow their presence in Britain.

  6. Do you oppose the attacks on Muslims and the growing Islamophobia in British society?

I oppose the attacks and the Islamophobia. Islamophobia is fomented by our government. I oppose all attacks on civil liberties and all scapegoating of races, religions or communities.

  7. Do you agree that the use of anti-terrorist laws to restrict the right of protest is an attack on civil liberties?

I agree that the use of anti-terrorist laws, and other laws such as anti-stalking, to restrict protest is an attack on civil liberties. It is also clear that these laws were introduced for that purpose.
