Chapel Allerton Election Address 2010
The following is the text of a letter sent to residents of Chapel Allerton in Leeds from the AGS candidates in the 2010 General and Local elections.
Dear Friend
No Cuts - Make the Bankers Pay
The cuts proposed by New Labour, the Conservatives and the Liberal Democrats to pay for the bankers' economic crisis would reduce public expenditure to below what it was under Thatcher's Tories before 1997.
What effect will this have?
The gains made in Education, the NHS and elsewhere are all going to be lost, whichever of the three main parties win the election. The cuts in public services, pay and jobs proposed by New Labour and the Tories are little different. The Liberal Democrats are also proposing huge cuts in public expenditure.
Keeping out the Tories
Some people think that we should vote for New Labour at the General Election to keep the Tories out. This ignores the full impact of the cuts, which Darling and Brown will carry out. New Labour proposes huge cuts that will hurt every one of us badly. Yet they still intend to go ahead with ID cards, Trident, a new generation of nuclear weapons, the Afghan war and building new aircraft carriers. These are hugely expensive projects - hundreds of billions of pounds. New Labour will carry out savage cuts combined with an aggressive pro-American foreign policy. That's what their manifesto says (if you read it carefully) and that's what they'll do.
What is happening in Leeds?
In this city we have endured the full impact of the Liberal Democrat / Tory coalition with their attacks on social welfare and the low paid refuse workers. Asked to carry out New Labour's polices on education, they have embraced the drive to privatization and closures. The local New Labour Councillors have hummed and hawed but never opposed a school closure. Neither have they fought the attacks on public transport. Although they gave nominal support to the refuse workers (to embarrass the Tory / Liberal Democrat coalition), they kept silent over the similar strike by the postal workers.
The capitalist system
The former Archbishop of Westminster said at the start of the present economic crisis that we "have to go beyond capitalism". Indeed, capitalism has been seen to fail spectacularly. It is now on life support provided by us taxpayers. Yet go through the election addresses of the three main parties: there is an absolute silence on the bankers and the fundamental crisis of the global economic system.
Worse, the three big parties have nothing to say about the environmental disaster facing our planet. At the Copenhagen talks the government showed it was incapable of facing up to the menace of climate change. For the economy and the environment, the solution has to be the end of the present profit driven capitalist system, which threatening all of us.
Vote AGS
A vote for New Labour is a vote for cuts. A vote for the AGS is a vote for an equitable policy on public expenditure, a safer future for our planet, and a peaceful future for everyone. The AGS proposes a fair system of taxation and an increased minimum wage. The AGS proposes an alternative to the monopoly capitalist economy, which is destroying our environment and leading to one war after another.
Each and every AGS vote counts - whereas voting for any of the three major parties is a truly wasted vote. But do not just vote for us. If you are not already a member then join us and help bring about a real socialist green alternative to the present rotten capitalist system.
